A Dutch artist living in New York City since 1983, Sjoerd Doting concentrates on cityscapes, interiors, and portraits. He has maintained a studio in Long Island City since 1990.
In his cityscapes Doting documents the changes in the urban landscape around
him. He explores the dramatic nature of space, in which human presence is
merely suggested. He works mostly from life: some works are produced entirely
on site, others are based on sketches done on site, which he combines and
reworks in his studio.
In the summer of 2001, Doting was awarded a residency in the Studioscape program
on the 91st floor the World Trade Center, sponsored by the Lower Manhattan
Cultural Council. Two WTC paintings shown here were recreated after the originals
were destroyed on 9/11.
